Carolina Panthers

Following the NBA awarding an expansion franchise to Charlotte in 1987, former Baltimore Colt Jerry Richardson began an ownership group to try to convince the NFL to award an expansion team to the city and region.
In 1993, the NFL granted the group a team, and the Carolina Panthers were born, and began play in 1995 along with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, the Panthers reached the playoffs for the second time in their history in 2003, and once again, made the most of their trip. Carolina won the NFC South title with an 11-5 mark, then ousted the Cowboys in the wild-card round. The team then hit the road and beat the Rams in St. Louis in the divisional round and then the Eagles in Philadelphia for the team's first NFC title. In Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Panthers played the Patriots tightly, but fell 32-29 on Adam Vinatieri's field goal with just four seconds remaining.
After missing the playoffs in 2004, the team returned to the postseason in 2005, reaching the NFC title game again thanks to wins over the Giants and Bears, but lost the conference title to the Seahawks.
